Talentyard PA recruitment

Susie, our Head of Talent and Senior Consultant has been an invaluable member of the TalentYard team since she started 8 years ago. Read more about her experience and insights here as we approach our 10 year anniversary!

How would you describe working at TalentYard?

I feel very lucky to work at TalentYard. We have a very supportive working culture where I am a trusted team member. It is a joy to work alongside experienced professionals who are committed to delivering a thorough, high-quality service and there is a refreshing lack of internal competition. In fact – it is the opposite. We work as a team and everyone is collaborative, approachable and supportive with one another so that we can all thrive.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in your career so far?

The biggest lesson I have learnt is the importance of building genuine relationships. Trust, consistency and honesty matter far more than quick wins, and taking the time initially to truly understand people leads to better outcomes for everyone involved. Also – the importance of a supportive and trusting working culture to enhance productivity and motivation at work. Working smarter, not harder and being efficient means a better work/life balance.

What do you enjoy most and least about your job?

I absolutely love interacting with people. Despite having done this job for over 15 years I still genuinely enjoy interviewing candidates because I love to ask questions and find out about people, build a bond and enjoy a little natter along the way!

What do you enjoy most and least about your job?

I think my team would agree, that admin is not my strong suit – sorry! I do try!

How has the industry changed since you started?

The industry has changed so much, it is almost hard to know where to start. There have been so many hurdles with Covid, the economy, even things like GDPR – I am in awe of our director Marion as we approach our 10 year anniversary for building a business and persevering when things have not always been easy. A big change was post-Covid and shifting to a lot more working from home. Candidate expectations have changed as have attitudes around work/life balance and clients have had to adapt significantly or they have struggled to retain talent.

What should candidates be doing to improve their career prospects?

Candidates should focus on clearly understanding and communicating their value. This means keeping CVs and profiles up to date and being able to articulate skills and achievements confidently, and tailoring applications rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Being open to feedback and continuously developing skills are also key to standing out in an increasingly competitive market.
