Coaching is a word that is used a lot but what does it actually mean in a practical sense, and how could it help you?
What is Coaching?
Coaching is about helping you move from where you are at, to where you want to be. It is a process where a trained coach supports you in gaining clarity, setting goals and making progress in a structured way.
It isn’t about someone giving you all the answers but guiding you to think more clearly and work out the best path forward for yourself. During your coaching discussions you might focus on clarifying what you want to achieve, what is stopping you, breaking things down into manageable steps, staying accountable for taking action and reflecting on what is or isn’t working and adapting. The focus is always on moving forwards, and breaking patterns that keep you stuck.
It offers you space to think, creating time to step back and observe yourself more objectively. A good coach will ask you questions you might not ask yourself and unlock new ways of thinking.
Career coaching is the same idea but focused on your working life. It might help you to think about your next move, improve interview skills, or widen your horizon for job hunting, helping you to uncover strengths and skills you might not have known you had and increase your confidence in yourself, or approach the job market with a clearer plan.
It is often used if you feel stuck in your current role, are considering a change or trying to stand out in a competitive job search.
